2008 Program List
Educational Programs
Architects in Training
Held yearly, Architects in Training is a series of six seminars designed to offer emerging Architects a practical curriculum, to help individuals to be more productive and effective in their work environment.
This Will Kill That?
“This Will Kill That” references Victor Hugo's famous chapter in Notre Dame a Paris where the issue of literature replacing architecture as the primary conduit of transmitting information is debated. The group uses literature and works of non-fiction as a framework to discuss topics of architecture and urbanism. By fostering discussion between architects, allied professionals, various academic disciplines, and the general public on shared issues of urban life, these discussions raise the general awareness of the role of architecture in the urban realm. In order to facilitate meaningful discourse, the group has assembled a list of books covering a range of time periods, cultures, and geographical locations providing multiple perspectives on the broader urban condition. This Will Kill That meets twice per book. The first meeting is an informal open group discussion. The second meeting is a reading by the author or other authority on the given book followed by Q&A and a reception.
Techday 2008
Tech Day is a daylong Saturday program that brings vendors of cutting-edge technological systems to the Center, for both informal and structured dialogue with architects. The first TechDay, held in 2005, focused on new and emerging digital technologies, including those developed by SketchUp, Vectorworks, and Apple.
IDP Lecture with Professional Practices Committee
A series of programs about the IDP process and recent changes in the taking the registration exam
Design Oriented Programs
ENYA Competitions 2008: South Street Seaport: Re-Envisioning the Urban Edge
The ENYA Biennial Competition Program endeavors to broaden the scope of architectural discourse by attracting international participants to the questions posed by a design challenge, grounded in the context of New York City. The program aims to provide service for authentic clients who have historical, environmental and social awareness, develop opportunities to work with non-profit, governmental and community organizations, and fill a void within the community. Competition activities generally extend beyond the program itself to include exhibitions, community workshops, and a publication.
Schedium
Schedium is a drawing series, pairing established architects with emerging professionals to sketch on a common theme in a series of live performances before an audience. As mechanization and digital media are increasingly engulfing the office and academic environments, ENYA seeks to probe the relevance of manual drawing in the creative process for architects. In today’s climate of increased digital anonymity, the value of drawing is becoming increasingly important, as the art is rapidly disappearing. It is the mission of this program to address the state of current drawing and capture two very distinct generations of architects, investigating this unique, and perhaps unparalleled, divide.
Professional Networking
Mentoring: Beyond IDP
Mentoring: Beyond IDP is a program designed to provide young architects with access to inspiring, experienced architects in a comfortable, informal group setting. The foundation and continuum of architectural practice has always had its roots in education, and mentoring has been the traditional method of teaching young architects. Historically, young architects worked alongside a master architect and learned by listening, observing, and participating. The last few decades has seen a shift away from this form of education. This program fills the gap by providing young architects with a program that reinvents the historical model-mentoring, facilitating personal relationships and fostering the learning process with experienced architects.
ENYA Networks Events
ENYA Networks will act as an outreach between ENYA and other young professional- focused arts groups in the city. The format may include seminars on public speaking and establishing a professional outreach system and will incorporate at least one informal cross-networking event.
Demystifying the ARE (with Roundtable Committee)
Four successful recent takers of the Architectural Registration Exam (the ARE) describe their experiences through the process, sharing many useful suggestions and specific tips they used to navigating the complex waterways to licensure.
ARE Jeopardy
Currently in development it provides a creative interactive environment for ARE taker to study in a group environment while meeting others taking the exam and enjoying the process.
Tours and Exhibitions
ENYA Competition Tour
In conjunction with New York State, a tradition has been established whereby each AIA NYS Chapter is asked to host an abbreviated traveling version of the previous year’s competition. The program includes a presentation and introduction by the competition’s organizers at each of the stops.
Industry Tours
Bringing the architectural community into rarely accessed, under-construction or recently completed projects, this program consists of tours led by professionals involved in the design of each building. The benefit of these early ENYA-hosted industry tours have been run since 2004. Previous tours include: the Folk Art Museum, the Apple Store, the Tweed Courthouse, the Austrian Cultural Forum and the Hearst Building.
New York State Tours
Emerging Architects Tour New York State is a program conceptualized by the Emerging New York Architects (ENYA) New York Chapter to help bring young architects across the state in contact with each other, inside New York State’s greatest buildings. Emerging Architects Tour New York State is a three-part series of weekend tours designed for young architects. Each tour will take place in a different region of New York State, focusing on the unique history, urban design, and architecture of the area.
ENYA Competition 2008: Exhibition at the Center
As part of the biennial ENYA Competition, there is an award ceremony and exhibition opening at the Center for Architecture shortly after the final jury.
