10.14.15: The minds behind the innovative trash-management project Closed Loops, Juliette Spertus and Benjamin Miller, joined the Center for Architecture at 181 Front Street, the South Street Seaport Culture District, to discuss the transportation of trash, the city’s landfills and waterways, and new ways of designing our waste system.
10.16.15: Architects Sebastian Kaempf and Anke Roggenbuck of KARO Architects (pictured above), and Christoph Bartmann, director of the Goethe-Institut New York, toured Building of the Day participants around the newly relocated and designed German Cultural Center, equipped with a public library, a performance space, and offices a few floors above.
10.19.15: At the Building of the Day tour of the Theatre for a New Audience at the Polonsky Shakespeare Center, H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture’s Geoff Lynch, AIA, LEED AP, and David Haakenson, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, explained how the Center’s design sets the stage for a collective theater experience.
10.20.15: Larissa Gentile, New Building Project Director for the Whitney, guided Archtober tour participants through the galleries of the Renzo Piano-designed Whitney Museum of American Art, which opened to the public in May.
10.22.15: Leonard Leung, AIA, LEED AP, enlightened Archtober tour-goers about PBDW Architects’ design strategies at the Educational Alliance, which improves circulation and welcomes the Lower East Side community.
10.23.15: Ostap Rudakevych and Masayuki Sono of Clouds Architecture Office gave Archtober participants a tour of their 2015 AIANY Design Awards-winning St. Mark’s Bookshop and its continuous, cloud-like bookcases.
10.24.15: E. Bruce Barrett, AIA, Sophia Pappas, David Steiner, Mary Burnham, AIA, Edith Ackermann, Tovah Klein, Jeff Dugan, AIA, and Umberto Dindo, FAIA, spoke at the AIANY Architecture for Education Committee’s interdisciplinary symposium on early childhood education and Universal Pre-K in New York.
10.26.15: HHL Architects Partner Matthew W. Meier, AIA, gave Archtober participants an insdiers’ look around El Barrio, Artspace’s community-driven live/work artists’ housing project. El Barrio houses 89 artists, selected from a pool of 53,000 applicants.
10.27.15: Florian Idenburg, Amanda Reeser Lawrence, Keith Krumwiede, Jorge Otero-Pailos, and Curator Ana Miljački drew upon the Center’s current exhibition, “Un/Fair Use,” and more, in their discussion about architecture and copyright law for the public program, Law x Copy.
10.27.15: Aaron Dorf of Snøhetta guided Archtober tour participants through the multi-use and highly secure September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion.
10.28.15: Curator Donald Albrecht led tour participants through the exhibit “Designing Home: Jews and Mid-Century Modernism” at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, following the presentation of the museum’s architect Kevin Roche, FAIA.
