The Civic Leadership Program (CLP) is designed to develop a class of emerging professionals into civic leaders by improving participants’ ability to steer public projects and initiatives through NYC’s network of municipal agencies, boards, and processes. The CLP will serve as a one-year mentorship program where 10 selected participants will plan and host 5 development sessions and 2 public events. These sessions and events will foster the critical skills architects need to garner public support and project approval. Participants’ improvements in public speaking and presenting, community outreach and relations, and constituent consensus will be emphasized. #aianyclp

Vision
The AIANY Emerging New York Architects committee identified a need for emerging architects to advocate for issues that concern and inspire them. The CLP focuses on developing skills that benefit designers who aim to operate in the public realm, as well designers who may one day consider a career in public service or elected office. The CLP’s goal, to strengthen AIANY’s culture of public advocacy, will also help to develop the next generation of AIA leaders.

Structure
The curriculum focuses on relevant issues, such as public interest design, land use and public space, community engagement and relations, public development and infrastructure, sustainability and resilience, funding and financial support, political obstacles and opportunities, and new business models. The ten participants will pair off after selecting their topic of interest. Each pair will then plan and host one of the 5 monthly development sessions as well as one of the two public forum events at the Center for Architecture.
