10.01.09: Eleven teams of architects took to their yachts to the high seas of the Hudson River at the Ninth Annual Architects Regatta, hosted by Gerry Dolezar, Les Metalliers Champenois, and held to aid Project City Kids. Although it was a chilly October evening, the hardy sailors maneuvered their boats through winds of up to 15 knots. A handful of spectators bravely made the journey out to the Manhattan Yacht Club’s floating clubhouse to cheer their colleagues on.

As in the past, the competition was fierce, particularly between boats sailed by Polshek Partnership, and Fuller & D’Angelo/Pei Partnership. The two were neck-and-neck for the first two of three races, before Polshek was forced to return to the starting line in the third for a false start. However, thanks to the skippering prowess of principal Todd Schliemann, FAIA, Polshek came through the field to place a dramatic third in the final race. Overall, Fuller & D’Angelo/Pei Partnership placed first, Polshek second, and William Nicholas Bodouva Architects third. AIANY placed a very respectable sixth out of 11 — a definite improvement on last year’s ninth place!
