The Zero Waste Design Guidelines address the crucial role that design can play in achieving NYC’s ambitious goal, outlined in OneNYC, to send zero waste to landfills by 2030. As a resource to help designers, building operators, and planners, the guidelines show how to dramatically reduce waste and work toward the adoption of circular material flows. Applying design strategies to our current system of linear material use will improve sidewalks and buildings, lessening the environmental and social impacts of waste in our city and beyond.

To promote the implementation of the guidelines, three lunchtime learning sessions are now available at no cost for architects, sustainability consultants, planners, and developers. Different sessions are available, to focus on:

  • Residential buildings
  • Commercial buildings
  • Food service businesses
  • Collection and Urban Design

These sessions will introduce design strategies found in the guidelines. Presentations will also include a demonstration of how the waste calculator can be used to estimate the volume of space needed to capture and manage waste streams based on building type and size.

The course has been approved for AIA CES 1.0 LU | 1.0 HSW and 1.0 GBCI.
