The Architects’ Regatta took place this year on Thursday, 09.12.13, following a course laid out near the Statue of Liberty. As we have come to expect, the AIA New York Chapter’s “Flying Eagles” did exceedingly well given the strange skies and despite an unfortunate technical mishap. Skippered by AIANY Housing Committee Co-Chair Wids DeLaCour, AIA, this year’s salty crew included 2013 Chapter President Jill N. Lerner, FAIA, former President Mark Ginsberg, FAIA, Blake Middleton, AIA, of Handel Architects, and Bruce Fowle, FAIA, of FXFOWLE.

Only one of the two scheduled races took place before a storm rolled in and the skies opened, drenching those on the spectator barge, including Oculus Editor Kristen Richards, Hon. AIA, Oculus contributor Gwenaëlle de Kerret, and yours truly.

The race was won by a combined team from Fuller D’Angelo/Pei Partnership, just ahead of crews from Thomas Juul-Hansen and from Daniel Frisch Architecture.

The traditional song by AIANY accompanying the awarding of conciliatory gag trophies would have been, if not rained out, a slight reworking and parodic translation of Les Bras de Mer (The Arms of the Sea), by Bréton troubadour Yann Tiersen and Dominique A. Perhaps at a ceremony soon we will hear the revised lyrics (The Architects of the Sea), which start: “From the place where we finished / We saw the bow of your boat / Way behind, way behind / And barely staying afloat.”

A good time was had, money was raised for children’s programs, and Team AIANY did defeat, again, traditional rival Robert A.M. Stern Architects.

Better luck next year to all.
