Borough presidents and New York City Council members are now accepting applications for community board appointments. Community boards are volunteer advisory groups that provide neighborhood input to city agencies and elected officials.
The primary responsibility of community board members is to oversee local land use issues, such as zoning changes. Therefore, it is essential that more land use professionals, particularly architects, serve on their community boards. Currently, around 50 AIA New York members are community board members, providing much-needed professional expertise on land use and the built environment.
As an architect, serving on a community board is an important way to give back to your community. You may apply to serve either in the community board where you work or the community board where you live. Be sure to attend your local community board meetings and introduce yourself to current members in order to get a better idea of what serving entails.
Please reach out to Iyabo Babatunde, Membership & Programs Coordinator, at ibabatunde@aiany.org or (212) 358-6117, if you apply or have any questions. She will keep track of your application and will advocate with your borough president and council member for your appointment.
