Renfrew Bridge is a landmark infrastructure project and the UK’s first double-leaf cable-stayed swing bridge, representing a major advancement in engineering and regional connectivity. As part of a $126M investment, it creates a direct link between Renfrew and Yoker, unlocking significant economic and mobility benefits. For decades, the lack of a crossing forced residents into long detours—either a pedestrian ferry, a 13-mile drive to the nearest bridge, or a 7-mile route through the Clyde Tunnel. The Clyde Waterfront and Renfrew Riverside (CWRR) initiative identified a new crossing as a priority in the 2019 Glasgow City Region Deal, with Renfrewshire Council commissioning a bridge to improve access for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists while supporting local economic development. The resulting design is a 603.7-foot movable bridge with an asymmetric “bobtail” cable-stayed configuration. Its sculptural pylons reference historic Clyde shipyard cranes, reinforcing the area’s industrial heritage. The bridge uses slewing bearings and drives to enable smooth operation while accommodating complex engineering requirements, including wind loads, thermal movement, and fabrication tolerances. Extensive prefabrication reduced on-site disruption and minimized construction impacts on surrounding communities. Sustainability was central to the project, achieving a 35% reduction in carbon compared to conventional bridge construction. This was achieved through material optimization, including a lightweight steel orthotropic deck, reduced foundation requirements, and efficient structural design, resulting in significant embodied carbon savings and a 120-year design life. Beyond infrastructure, the bridge acts as a catalyst for regional regeneration, supporting manufacturing growth along the Clyde waterfront and contributing to projects such as the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland. It also supported approximately 950 construction jobs and is expected to enable up to 1,400 permanent roles. In its first six months, Renfrew Bridge carried over 2.1 million vehicles, 57,000 pedestrians, and 30,000 cyclists, demonstrating its immediate impact and demand.
