Line 5 Eglinton is Toronto’s most significant transit expansion in a generation, spanning 12 miles and connecting 22 communities. The line includes 25 stations—15 underground and 10 at-grade—along with three interchange hubs and a maintenance facility. The project presented a rare opportunity to design a complete transit system with a unified architectural vision. Consistent elements across all stations create a cohesive identity, simplify navigation, and ensure a high-quality, people-centered experience focused on clarity, comfort, and accessibility. Daylight and openness define the design, transforming stations into welcoming public spaces. Glass façades maximize natural light, while illuminated entrances act as beacons along the streetscape. A balanced use of natural and integrated lighting enhances orientation and creates a calm, legible environment for passengers. Stations follow three typologies—pavilion, corner, and embedded—each tailored to its urban context while maintaining a consistent system-wide language. The design considers the full passenger journey, from the public realm to platforms, with features such as transparent façades, generous canopies, open sightlines, and strategically located entrances that support seamless movement and integration with surrounding development. Sustainability is embedded throughout, with passively ventilated façades, rainwater-collecting bioswales, Canada’s first green track, and durable materials that support long-term performance. Each station is also designed as a catalyst for future growth. Underground stations accommodate potential overbuild development, while at-grade stops strengthen first- and last-mile connections, improving walkability and supporting transit-oriented communities. By integrating architecture, infrastructure, and public space, Line 5 Eglinton enhances the passenger experience while advancing equitable, sustainable urban development across Toronto.
