AIA New York Announces 2016 Design Awards Winners

March 1, 2016

NEW YORK CITY, March 1, 2016 – On February 29, 2016, a jury of independent architects, educators, critics, and planners from outside New York City convened at the Center for Architecture to select the winners of the 2016 AIA New York Design Awards. That night, they publicly announced the 31 winning projects at a symposium at the Center for Architecture.

The 31 selected projects and the architecture firms that designed them – many of whom were on hand for the symposium – represent the exceptional work by AIA New York members and architects practicing in New York City in four categories: Architecture, Interiors, Projects, and Urban Design. Collectively, the jurors enthusiastically decided not to award a Best in Competition, noting that each winning project had successfully developed an idea and approach to resolve and elevate particular challenges.

Each winning project, granted either an “Honor” or “Merit” award, was chosen for its design quality, response to its context and community, program resolution, innovation, thoughtfulness, and technique. Submitted projects had to be completed by AIANY members, architects/designers practicing in New York, or be New York projects designed by architects/designers based elsewhere. There were 366 entries in the four categories, including 185 submissions in the architecture category alone. The winners range from a chicken coop to large-scale urban interventions. 19 of the 31 winners were also NYC-based projects.

“This year’s jury was drawn to projects that engaged the environment, were innovative, and showed clarity of concept,” said AIANY 2016 President Carol Loewenson, FAIA. “They celebrated the restoration of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and recommended that Preservation be its own category next year.”

Design Awards Exhibition
All winning work will be exhibited in the 2016 AIANY Design Awards exhibition at the Center for Architecture beginning Friday, April 15, with an opening reception from 6-8pm. The exhibition, designed by Tsto, will remain on view through Saturday, June 25.

Honors and Awards Luncheon and Upcoming Programs
In addition to the Jury Symposium, winning projects will be recognized at the Honors and Awards Luncheon, Friday, April 15, at Cipriani Wall Street (www.aiany.org/awardslunch).

The Luncheon will also fete Medal of Honor recipient Annabelle Selldorf, FAIA; Award of Merit recipient Robert M. Rubin; and Stephen A. Kliment Oculus Award recipient Iwan Baan. The Luncheon serves as an important fundraiser for AIA New York and the organization’s ongoing mission to show that design matters.

Members of the press are invited to all events. Jurors and a list of the winning projects are on the following pages. For project details or for press RSVP to Design Awards events, contact Camila Schaulsohn at AIA New York, 212-358-6114 or cschaulsohn@aiany.org.
