Second Place

This year, Archtober partnered with the Four Freedoms Park Alliance to host a special Archtober Summer Kickoff event on 07.12.17. FDR Four Freedoms Park in Roosevelt Island, a four-acre memorial to FDR that celebrates the Four Freedoms he articulated in his 1941 State of the Union, offers a stunning view of Manhattanhenge, the day when the sun sets perfectly in line with the city’s street grid. This year, a dramatic sky substituted for the sun to make the event a great success, drawing 1,000 guests despite the threat of thunder and rain.

Archtober also organized its first-ever #ArchtoberSelects Instagram Challenge, which garnered more than 100 entries. Four photographers selected by Instagram influencer @field_condition won tickets to Classic Harbor Line and AIA New York’s architecture cruise around lower Manhattan. First and second prizes went to unexpected reflections of the skyline by @babkwth and @tylrrvera respectively, while a simple, elegant composition by @littlekidnyc took third place. @missmonicasalvi won an honorable mention for a play on perspective featuring the park and the skyline.

The Archtober 2017 website will go live next week! Don’t forget to check it out and start planning for NYC’s annual architecture and design festival!
