Located steps away from the Atlantic Ocean in Sagaponack, New York, this project transforms a compact site into a harmonious retreat, combining a modest 1950s-inspired shingled beach cottage, a pink Corian-clad pool, and a contemporary three-level pool house. The pool, set in a grassy field, reflects Sagaponack’s rose-colored skies at dawn and dusk, evoking the charm of the midcentury American dream. A 1,400-square-foot pool house balances form, function, and environmental stewardship. The 500-square-foot above-grade structure includes a bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette, and a dramatic 14-foot cantilever that minimizes its footprint while offering striking views of the pool and landscape. Below grade, a 900-square-foot painting studio and gallery provide a serene, naturally lit space illuminated by a concealed, polished stainless light well. High-gloss metal paneling complements the pool’s materiality, creating a bold yet subtle architectural counterpoint to the shingled cottage. A green roof with native vegetation reduces heat gain, manages stormwater, and enhances the site’s ecological health. By stacking spaces and integrating sustainable strategies, the design fulfills programmatic needs while creating a meditative escape that reflects the natural surroundings and timeless character of the project.
