Recognizing that buildings are a major contributor to global warming and the critical role of embodied versus operational carbon, the project Biogenic House Sections, includes the book Manual of Biogenic House Sections, the speculative designs for Five Biogenic Houses, and an accompanying exhibition, and focuses on houses built from materials that either sequester carbon (plants), use materials with very low embodied carbon (earth and stone) or reuse substantial amounts of existing materials. The Manual contains fifty-five innovative houses from around the world through intricately detailed cross-sectional perspectives and axonometrics complemented by photographs of construction processes, interiors and exteriors. Analytical drawings make legible an approach to architecture based on circular material logics and a more holistic relationship to our shared environment. The Five Biogenic Houses continues this investigation and uses biogenic material assemblies as the catalyst for building form, domestic organization, and spatial seduction. Our goal with these concept houses is to demonstrate the creative opportunities for rethinking domestic dwelling by embracing biogenic materials and their full life cycle as integral to the design process.
