NEW YORK, New York, May 5, 2016 – The AIANY New Practices Committee is proud to recognize six young architecture and design firms working in New York City. The winners of this sixth-biennial competition and exhibition offer a glimpse into New York City’s future architectural landscape. These firms will be featured in an exhibition opening on May 12 at 6pm at the Center for Architecture.

A roundtable discussion will follow the exhibition opening. James Slade, FAIA, founder of Slade Architecture, will moderate a conversation with members of the winning firms.

For the New Practices New York 2016 exhibition, designers form-ula, winners of New Practices New York 2014, have explored the conventions of construction and display in the Center for Architecture’s downstairs galleries. An inverted tectonic wrapper clings to the gallery walls, celebrating each of the firm’s design philosophies while binding them together to highlight the current state of young emerging New York practices.

The six winning firms have each created a “wonder box” specifically for the show, a space of material musings and formal advocacy. In addition to these site-specific pieces, there are models, photographs, and drawings that take on questions of play, place, perception, and engagement while revealing the life of each practice. The exhibition will also include a digital retrospective of past New Practices New York winners.

THE COMPETITION
Six exciting new architecture and design firms working in New York were chosen as the New Practices New York 2016 competition winners. To qualify for the juried portfolio competition, practices had to be founded after 2006 and be located in New York City’s five boroughs.

The winners were announced on January 29, 2016. Following the announcement and leading up to the exhibition, the winning firms have organized talks about their innovative work and practices at the Cosentino Showroom.

Over the course of a decade, the New Practices New York competition has identified future leaders in architecture and design. Past winners include SO-IL, David Benjamin The Living, WORKac, SOFTlab, and dlandstudio architecture + landscape architecture.

“With its sixth biennial competition, AIA New York and its New Practices Committee continue their commitment to serving as a platform for new and innovative models of architecture practice. The entries to the 10th-anniversary competition and successive winners’ lectures showed once more the diversity and quality of architecture firms in New York City. Considering this year’s theme of ‘Prospect,’ the jury recognized six winners that have leveraged multiple aspects of the profession, utilizing unique and innovative strategies, both in the projects and the practices they have started. AIANY promotes the next generation of design leaders

ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION

The winners of the New Practices New York 2016 competition will make brief presentations of their work followed by a discussion moderated by James Slade, FAIA, IIDA, LEED AP, founder of Slade Architecture.

EXHIBITION OPENING PARTY
The exhibition opening for New Practices New York 2016 will be held Thursday, May 12, at 6pm at the Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place. The opening is free and open to the public.
