NEW YORK CITY, March 10, 2015 – On March 9, 2015, seven eminent architects, landscape architects, educators, critics, and planners convened at the Center for Architecture to select the winners of the 2015 AIA New York Chapter Design Awards. That night, they publicly announced the 35 winning projects and one Best in Competition award at a symposium at the Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place. The conversation was moderated by Beatrice Galilee, Associate Curator of Architecture and Design for the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The 35 selected projects and the architecture firms that designed them – many of whom were on hand for the symposium – represent the exceptional work by AIA New York members and other architects practicing in New York City in four categories: Interiors, Architecture, Projects, and Urban Design. The best in Competition is selected from the four categories.

Each winning project, granted either an “Honor” or “Merit” award, was chosen for its design quality, response to its context and community, program resolution, innovation, thoughtfulness, and technique. Submitted projects had to be completed by members of the AIA New York Chapter, architects/designers practicing in New York, or be New York projects designed by architects/designers based elsewhere. There were 391 entries in four categories, including 186 submissions in the architecture category alone. The winners ranged from small pavilions to large-scale master plans. 17 of the 35 winners were also NYC-based projects.

“This year’s jury was demanding and thoughtful,” said AIANY 2015 President Tomas Rossant, AIA, “and their selections speak to new values: Form is no longer to be celebrated for its own sake and architecture in its greatest expression must positively impact institutions, strengthen communities, act sustainably and resiliently, and spark optimism, curiosity, and generosity in the human spirit. The selected projects prove this can be done.” The winning projects included seven Honor Awards in Architecture, two in Interiors, two in Projects, and one in Urban Design. Design Awards Exhibition
All winning work will be exhibited in the 2015 AIANY Design Awards exhibition at the Center for Architecture beginning Thursday, April 23, with an opening reception from 6-8pm. The exhibition will remain on view through June 20. The exhibition is designed by Perrin Studio.

Honors and Awards Luncheon and Upcoming Programs
In addition to the Jury Symposium, winning projects will be recognized at the Honors and Awards Luncheon, Wednesday, April 22, at Cipriani Wall Street (www.aiany.org/awardslunch).

The Luncheon will also fete Medal of Honor recipient Grimshaw Architects; Award of Merit recipient Mary Miss; and Stephen A. Kliment Oculus Award recipient Justin Davidson. The Luncheon serves as an important fundraiser for the AIA New York Chapter and our ongoing mission to show that design matters.

The Design Awards Honor Winners’ program is scheduled for May 12 at 6pm at the Center for Architecture.

AIA New York is the oldest and largest chapter of the American Institute of Architects, with more than 5,000 architects, allied professionals, students and community members.
