Mission Statement

AIA New York cultivates an open, adept, and future-forward architectural community. We empower members to work at the apex of their abilities through critical exchange, access to professional resources, and advocacy on issues that advance positive change.

Who We Are

Established in 1857, AIA New York is the oldest and largest chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), serving as the collective voice of nearly 5,000 licensed architects, allied professionals, students, and design enthusiasts in New York City.

The Center for Architecture, inaugurated in 2003 as the AIA’s first-ever cultural institution, engages local and international audiences with the value, impact, and wonder of architecture. Together, we advance the value and practice of architecture to promote just and sustainable communities.

Both AIA New York and the Center for Architecture advocate for the importance of design in enhancing urban life, fostering engagement among architects, professionals, and the public. We prioritize values such as civic engagement, equity, environmental sustainability, resiliency, technological innovation, and inspiring design.

AIA New York offers lectures and continuing education courses, numerous award programs, mentorship and professional development resources, 27 issue-specific Program Committees, newsletters and social media, and a quarterly print magazine, Oculus.

Our Values

The American Institute of Architects New York (AIANY) is dedicated to promoting and practicing diversity, equity, and inclusion in every aspect of our organization. We understand that as architects, designers and others from allied fields, our ability to design for and with diverse communities is essential, and our work should reflect the rich diversity of our society.

AIANY endeavors to create an environment of belonging that celebrates the unique identities, perspectives, and experiences of all individuals. We firmly believe that fostering a diverse membership and leadership is crucial to serving and advancing the profession in meaningful ways.

We actively promote these values through our programming, policies, and practices. We will strive to increase representation, equity, and inclusion and to remove barriers to access and opportunity within our institution, our profession, and beyond.
