The reimagined Doris Duke Theatre draws on the site's rich heritage and the legacy of the former theatre. This project embraces Jacob’s Pillow’s diverse background by creating an accessible, inclusive, and adaptable space for dialogue, collaboration, and education. At the heart of this new theater lies a celebration of movement, space and connection. The original Doris Duke Theatre provided a workshop space celebrated for its intimacy and warmth, qualities that became central to the vision for its successor after the original was lost in a fire in 2020. Situated on the site of the original, the new Doris Duke Theatre's concept embraces Indigenous design through an organically shaped permeable lower volume; creating an immersive venue that retains an open and porous feeling that connects with the natural setting. The approach embraces the site from all sides creating a flexible, adaptive theater in a compact footprint. The new theater rises from the ashes, continuing Ted Shawn’s mission: to foster the creation, presentation, and preservation of diverse dance forms; to educate emerging artists; and to engage audiences in the art of dance. The result is a living, breathing, adaptable theater that honors its storied past while embracing the possibilities of the future.
