I am pleased to announce that Kavitha Mathew, AIA, LEED AP, has joined AIA New York as Leadership and Engagement Coordinator. This new position will work with the chapter as we prepare for the A’18 Conference in New York (June 20-23, 2018). Among the work for A’18, Kavitha will coordinate local firms to lead AIA members from across the country in a city-wide volunteer service day at shelters and community centers on Saturday, June 23. Interested firms and members should contact Kavitha Mathew, Engagement and Leadership Coordinator, kmathew@aiany.org.

In addition, Kavitha will coordinate several special membership engagement initiatives, such as the second year of the AIANY Civic Leadership Program for emerging professionals looking to get more involved in politics and advocacy. Kavitha will also work with the AIANY Diversity & Inclusion Committee on a Whitney Young Initiative to provide guidance and resources to architects and firms around the pervasive lack of diversity in the profession (at the 1968 AIA Conference, Young challenged architects to pursue progressive and inclusive values in their work).

Kavitha has an impressive range of experience both as an architect and advocate for equity in the profession. She has recently focused her research and advocacy efforts on an investigation of workplace transparency in architecture firms; she also participated in the Equity by Design Hackathon at the 2017 Conference on Architecture. Kavitha worked as an architect at Ralph Lauren, where she directed their Corporate Architectural Services. She has also worked as project architect at firms including, Ted Moudis Associates, Spacesmith, and KPF.
