Editor's note: In the light of so much devastation on the Gulf Coast, the public – and industry – response to the Katrina calamity is heartening. For so many of us, it recalls our own 9/11, and as its 4th anniversary draws near, it is heartening to see the WTC Memorial Museum moving forward with three upcoming public forums (see below). Here's to a busy – and peaceful – autumn for us all.

ABOVE THE FOLD

Katrina Relief: AIANY Response
In reaction to the devastation wrought by hurricane Katrina on New Orleans and associated areas of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, the AIA New York Chapter Board, Executive Committee and Disaster Preparedness Task Force are setting in motion ways to help those affected by this disaster. Our response will be in coordination with National AIA Katrina Recovery initiatives, and with other civic/professional organizations, with the multi-disciplinary New York New Visions effort serving as our template. Through the Disaster Preparedness Task Force (an outgrowth of the Tsunami Task Force), we will coordinate efforts of various AIANY committees (housing, transportation and infrastructure, planning and urban design, emerging architects, etc) as well as coordination with other AIA chapters and other civic/professional organizations in the city, region, and nation – such as the American Planning Association, the American Society of Landscape Architects, and the Royal Institute of British Architects/USA.

While a great many groups will aid and fund emergency/relief efforts, there are very few places families and communities can turn to six months, a year, or two years after a disaster for assistance and for help in rebuilding. That is why we plan to focus our efforts where we can best make use of our expertise: housing assistance, building reconstruction, and community development. What can you do now?

Contribute: We have established a standing Disaster Relief Fund through the Center for Architecture Foundation (a 501c3 not for profit entity) and moneys earmarked for Katrina relief will be used for that purpose. If you would like to contribute, please e-mail your pledge to Annie Kurtin: akurtin@aiany.org, and send checks (made out to Center for Architecture Foundation, designated for Katrina relief) to: Katrina Relief, Center for Architecture Foundation, 536 LaGuardia Place, NY, NY 10012. Funds will become part of a larger Katrina-related effort being organized by National AIA to define needs and projects.

Volunteer: To volunteer directly, the National AIA Katrina Recovery web site has information. If you want to be informed of opportunities to participate as a professional volunteer (on-site or long-distance) in future Katrina or other disaster relief efforts, please e-mail Annie Kurtin: akurtin@aiany.org to be added to our communication database. Include a 2-3-sentence description of your background and interest/expertise. We will be organizing groups for disaster response training and other preparedness activities and will be in contact with you as these plans develop.

Contact: AIANY Chapter members who have questions concerning the Disaster Preparedness Task Force and wish to communicate with it should address questions to Annie Kurtin, AIANY staff coordinator: akurtin@aiany.org. Co-chairs are Ernie Hutton, Assoc AIA, AICP, and Lance Brown, FAIA.

September 15: WTC Memorial Museum Unveiling and Public Forums
The WTC Memorial Museum, dedicated to the events of February 26, 1993, and September 11, 2001, is to become a repository of artifacts and memories of the two attacks on the World Trade Center. Three upcoming workshops will offer the opportunity to discuss the preliminary programming concepts that have been developed by curatorial planners Howard+Revis Design Services, institutional planning consultant LORD Cultural Resources Planning and Management, and the LMDC.

The AIA NY Chapter and New York New Visions will host the initial informational kick-off session on September 15 at 6:00pm at the Center for Architecture. This will be the first public unveiling, presentation, and discussion of the Memorial Museum. Speakers will include members of the Memorial design team led by Davis Brody Bond Architects. This forum is free and open to the public, but RSVP is a must: 212.358.6111 or rsvp@aiany.org.

The following two Memorial Museum Program Workshops, co-sponsored by the Civic Alliance to Rebuild Downtown New York, LMDC, and the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation, will be held on September 19 and October 11 at 6:00pm at the NYU School of Continuing and Professional Studies in the Woolworth Building, 15 Barclay Street. These workshops will feature a presentation by curatorial and institutional planning consultants and discussions on the preliminary programming concepts. The workshops are free and open to the public, but advanced registration is required; click on link or call 212.253.2727 x317.

REPORTS FROM THE FIELD

Public and Private Sector + Community = Housing
by Linda G. Miller

Pratt Institute School of Architecture Professor Ron Shiffman, FAICP, didn't have to convince an audience of architects, urban planners, community-based planners, community activists, and community board members of the dire need for more affordable housing in New York. At the August 4 "Public and Private Sector + Community = Housing" forum at the Center for Architecture, Shiffman moderated a panel consisting of fellow veteran housing advocates: Irene Baldwin, Executive Director, Association for Neighborhood & Housing Development (ANHD); architect, planner, developer Carlton A. Brown, Principal and COO, Full Spectrum; Brad Lander, Director, Pratt Institute Center for Community and Environmental Development (PICCED); Theodore Liebman, FAIA, Partner, The Liebman Melting Partnership, past president of the AIA NY Chapter, formerly Chief of Architecture at the NYS Urban Development Corporation (UDC) where he oversaw the building of housing for 33,000 families statewide; and Mark Willis, head the Community Development Group, JP Morgan Chase and co-chair of Housing First!

High on the list of topics for discussion was the production of low- and moderate-income housing and the role that community-based development organizations, private developers, and the government will play in that sector. Will City Planning assume more of a leadership role? Can our City and State governments recreate the dynamic of the days when Ed Logue led the UDC and spearheaded projects such as Roosevelt Island, a mixed income "new town in town."

Organized by the by The UDC Retrospective Symposium and Exhibition Committee, PICCED; AIA NY Chapter, and in association with NY2050 and City Lore, the forum was held in conjunction with "Policy and Design for Housing: Lessons of the Urban Development Corporation 1968 – 1975," an exhibition on view through September 10 at the Center for Architecture that explores UDC projects of differing conditions.

According to Shiffman, "The exhibition demonstrates the State government's commitment to addressing the housing and community development needs of the late 1960s. That commitment was aborted in the mid-1970s and if we fast forward to today, we see a continuing housing crisis – albeit manifest in different ways."

What helped the housing crisis after the demise of the UDC was the community-based housing movement, which started to revitalize and stabilize their communities. In addition, the City's 10-year housing initiative has become a formidable development and revitalization force. Important questions remain to be answered: How do we get community groups to be active instead of reactive?

Can we create significant incentives to give developers who build affordable housing? In regards to projects such as the Atlantic Yards and the Far Westside, why are we allowing a public resource to be used by a private developer? And what is possibly the most frightening question: How are we preparing for an influx of four million immigrants in the next 30 years?

FringeNYC at the Center for Architecture
by Katherine Jaeger and Linda Roby

During the week of August 23, the Center for Architecture hosted four plays as part of the New York International Fringe Festival. Founded in 1996, and with an attendance of over 60,000 in 2004, FringeNYC has emerged as a leading institution in the theater community, producing the "new-and-untried" during the three-week festival each August. This year, the Center was home to: "In Search of Stanley Hammer"; "The Crazy Locomotive"; "LOL"; and "The Magnificent Hour," with each performance entertaining an average audience of 45. This was a fantastic opportunity for the Center to reach a new audience. While the Judith and Walter Hunt and Kohn Pedersen Fox Galleries were closed for viewing each afternoon to accommodate the performances, it was exciting to see the audience wander inquisitively about the Gerald D. Hines Gallery's current exhibition, "City Art: New York's Percent for Art Program," as they waited for their seats. (The exhibition is on view through September 24.)

In line with our mission to reach new audiences, hosting the FringeNYC was successful in expanding the use of Center as a theatrical venue. The flexibility of the space reflects our intent to welcome an ever-widening audience. Collaborating with institutions like FringeNYC truly keeps the Center hopping with fresh, new energy.

To plan an event, lecture, or performance at the Center for Architecture, contact Nina Ashkenazi, Programs & Event Coordinator: 212.358.6112 or nashkenazi@aiany.org.

Design Drop-Ins Take Center Stage
by Suzanne Mecs

The Center for Architecture is a bustling hub of activity where lectures, exhibitions, and meetings all compete for attention. Sometimes it is nice to just slow down and talk. That is why, since early this year, we have been hosting monthly drop-in events on Thursday or Friday evenings. Now dubbed "Design Drop-Ins," these events offer the chance for members and friends to view exhibits, discuss topics affecting their current work, and to connect with other members of the architectural community.

The Fall Season of Design Drop-Ins kicks off on Friday, September 23, during the AIA NY Chapter's annual Town Hall meeting at the Center for Architecture. And thanks to the curatorial efforts of Illya Azaroff, Assoc. AIA, future Design Drop-Ins will often be animated by a variety of performances which can make one think twice about the aesthetic aspects of design. Summer performances included the Heather Harrington Dance Company and Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers. The fall line-up includes: story telling for the urban environment by members of The Moth; jazz; and multimedia performances.
