AROUND THE CENTER

April 1, 5:30–8:00pm: "New York NOW" Opening + AIA/Center for Architecture Members Drop-in
The exhibition "New York NOW" offers a snapshot of recent work by members of the AIA NY Chapter and the Center for Architecture. It celebrates the diversity of the membership by representing the depth and breadth – and variety – of member projects. The exhibition, designed by Tsao & McKown Architects, and curated by Calvin Tsao, AIA, was first proposed by the late Arthur Rosenblatt, FAIA, and is installed at the Center in his memory.

With the success of the inaugural Fourth Friday Member Drop-in on February 25, the Chapter has decided to make the second Drop-in a First Friday instead, to coincide with the "New York NOW" opening. From 5:30–6:30pm, come celebrate the birthday of new AIA Fellow Frederic Schwartz, FAIA, along with Tracey Hummer, as they pour drinks for the membership. The events are free, but please RSVP: 212.358.6111 or rsvp@aiany.org.

March 29, 6:30–8:00pm: Experimental Architecture Lecture Series: Thomas Hanrahan, AIA: Serial Architecture
By the beginning of the 20th century, science emerged as dominant force in the discipline of design and architectural education. At the beginning this century, architects continue experimenting with new ideas. High science such as the Chaos theory, the genome project, developments in cognitive science, superstring theory, and the digital revolution have merged. Nature is once again in the center of the debate, as model and obstacle. It is within this context that the AIA New York Chapter Architecture Dialogue Committee launched the "Experimental Architecture" (PDF) lecture series in February with John Johansen, FAIA, who predicted that advances in this century will far eclipse in scale and speed those of the last century. (Johansen will be back at the Center – see April 4 listing.)

The program continues on March 29 with Thomas Hanrahan, AIA, hMa (hanrahanMeyers architects), discussing "Serial Architecture," and his experimentation with methods of reduction and refinement of architectural ideas in series. Future programs include: April 7: Peter Eisenman, FAIA: What is a diagram?; May 17: Winka Dubbeldam: Phoronomic Shapes; June 23: Stan Allen, AIA: Objects + Fields; and September 14: Paolo Riani: Uncharted Territory.
Tkts: $10/members; $15/non-members. CES Lus: 2, CES HSW: 2. RSVP: 212.358.1111 or rsvp@aiany.org.

March 30, 6:00–8:00pm: Demystify the ARE!
The Center for Architecture will host a free, informal seminar and discussion on candidacy preparation for the NY State Architectural Exam (ARE). Participants include: Roberta Washington, AIA, current member of the NY State Board for Architecture; Margot Woolley, AIA, recent member of the NY Board, currently Assistant Commissioner of the NYC Department of Design and Construction; Sarelle Weisberg, FAIA, former member of the NY Board, an architect in government, co-chair of the Round Table; and four young architects who will share their recent experience with the licensing process: Todd Hause, Carlos Rodriguez-Infanson, AIA, Arturo Oujo, and Jumaane Stewart. RSVP: 212.358.6111. For further information, call Sarelle at 212.579.1898 or email: stw33@mindspring.com.

March 30 – April 1: "Visualizing Change": Association for Community Design Annual Conference and "1% Solution" Launch
Design educators, professionals, and policymakers from around the country are gathering at the Center to explore tools and strategies that can be used to create positive changes in the built environment. Co-hosted by Pratt Institute and Common Ground Community, "Visualizing Change" will include tours of design initiatives in NYC neighborhoods, panel presentations, and interactive workshops. Registration: $100/ACD members; $125/professionals; $25/students. Click on link for program details.

In conjunction with the conference, Public Architecture, a not-for-profit, public interest architecture group, is hosting a reception on Thursday, March 31, 6:00-8:00pm, to celebrate the launch of its 1% Solution program and web site. The program's goal is to encourage architects to devote 1% of their billable hours to the public good through pro bono work. If every firm in the country signed on, according to Public Architecture's Executive Director John Cary, that boils down to "a mere 20 hours per person per year that collectively could add up to a total of more than 5 million hours annually." The site, funded in part by a major NEA grant, will be a national clearinghouse for information and opportunities relating to all aspects of the 1% Solution program and pro bono work in general. The reception is free and open to the public; no RSVP required.

April 4, 5:30–7:30pm: An Evening with John M. Johansen, FAIA
The AIA NY Chapter Housing Committee is hosting this evening with architect and educator John M. Johansen, FAIA. Johansen, best known for modern designs such as the U.S. Embassy in Dublin (1964), Goddard Library at Clark University (1968), and Mummers Theater in Oklahoma City (1970), will discuss what he considers his most inventive designs: private houses. Kevin C. Lippert, Publisher, Princeton Architectural Press, will make the introduction. Admission: free; CES HSW 1.5. RSVP: 212.358.1111 or rsvp@aiany.org.

April 11, 5:30–6:30pm: Leadership by Design – A Talk with Ambassador Richard N. Swett, FAIA
Ambassador Richard N. Swett, FAIA is the only architect to have served in the US Congress during the 20th century and one of very few architect-ambassadors in the nation's history. He will be at the Center for Architecture on Monday, April 11 to introduce and discuss his newly published book, Leadership by Design: Creating an Architecture of Trust. The book, according to Yale School of Architecture Dean Robert A. M. Stern, FAIA "reveals that the 'citizen-architect' has always been in our midst and begins an important dialogue about how that role should be designed for the future." Case studies in the US and Denmark inform Dick Swett's conception of the need for architects to step up to leadership roles in the formulation of public policy and social action. The research for the book was partially funded by an AIA New York Chapter Brunner Grant. Come help celebrate this extraordinary publication. Admission: free; CES LUS 1. RSVP: 212.358.1111 or rsvp@aiany.org.

Ambassador Swett will be on hand after his talk to sign copies of the book. Attendees are also invited to stay on at the Center for Architecture for the first 2005 meeting of Architects/Designers/Planners for Social Responsibility (ADPSR).

The project, designed by Goshow Architects, includes 41 two-bedroom and 10 three-bedroom apartments (in typical senior housing, apartments are studios or one-bedrooms). Amenities will benefit both old and young with ground-floor retail space, a community center, counseling offices, "smart" resource center and library, food service facilities, childcare services, and an outdoor recreation and play area. Brennan Beer Gorman Architects to Design Luxury High-rise Bangkok Residence Facade
Athenee Residence, a new luxury residential building in the heart of Bangkok, Thailand, will have its face carefully sculpted by NYC-based Brennan Beer Gorman Architects (BBG). The new 41-story residential tower will have 219 apartments, including seven penthouses. BBG is working closely with building architect A49 and interior designer Leo Design Group. The tower, scheduled for completion in 2007, will be clad in a sleek composition of glass, metal, stone, and masonry. An aspect of the city's culture comes into play also as Yann LeRoy, BBG's Design Partner, notes, "The tower's signature swooping roofline is inspired by hand gestures used in traditional Thai dance. The hand not only evokes a sense of protection for residents, but the gentle curve also offers a soft counterpoint to the tower's linear and vertical dynamism."

REPORTS FROM THE FIELD

London Belatedly: Going for the Gold Medallist
Frei Otto, architect/engineer and father of modern membranes and lightweight structures, received the Royal Gold Medal 2005 from George Ferguson, President, Royal Institute of British Architects on February 16 in London. A contingent of AIA NY Chapter members and colleagues, headed by President Susan Chin, FAIA, and including her husband, Charles McKinney, Jonathan Wimpenny, AIA, RIBA-USA, Mary Burke, AIA, Cynthia G. Fisher, and W. Norbert Young, FAIA, represented the Chapter.

Ferguson highlighted Otto's experience and influence and said that he is "one of the most inventive designers of our era." His projects and technology were highlighted in a film: the German Pavilion at Montreal, Stadia roofs at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Timber shell at Mannheim, Open Air Theatre at Bad Hersfeld, Heart Tent at the Diplomatic Club in Riyadh, and Train Station at Stuttgart. Hans Blomeier, Acting German Ambassador to the U.K., was impressed with Otto's modesty and proud of his "inspiration in the world of architecture." Otto noted that "we do our best to create the good environment of the future and good architecture does not follow taste."

IESNY 2005 Student Grant Design Competition – Evolving Shadows
For the fifth year, New York City design students were invited to participate in a citywide design competition: the study of light and shadow. The competition, held at the Center for Architecture on March 15th, allowed students to explore light as an art form, demonstrate light as a stimulus, and prove that light is a valuable medium. The objective of this year's design challenge was to develop a three-dimensional study of light, inspired by the relationship between shadows over time.

27 NYC student submitted entries, representing Parsons School of Design, FIT, and Pratt, with Parsons sweeping the competition. And the winners are:

First Place ($3,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to the Fall 2005 European Lighting Designers Association Workshop): Amer Maleh, Department of Architecture, Interior Design, and Lighting, Parsons School of Design

Second Place ($1,000): JD Fernandez, Department of Fine Arts, Parsons School of Design

Third Place ($500): Kotone Francowski, Department of Architecture, Interior Design, and Lighting, Parsons School of Design

Honorable Mention: Steve Rosemberg, Department of Architecture, Interior Design, and Lighting, Parsons School of Design
