Green Gangs at the Center

The Jets and Javits green stadium and green roof joined together at the Center for Architecture on June 14th. Now on view through early August at 536 LaGuardia Place is one of the most environmentally advanced stadium projects in the world, conceived to host the 2012 Summer Games, the New York Jets home games and a variety of conventions and convocations complementing the activities of the soon too-be-expanded Jacob Javits Convention Center. Both parts of the Hudson Yard's proposed Convention Corridor were presented in an afternoon press conference by Robert Boyle (chair of the Javits Center), Jay Cross (president of the NY Jets), Sam Spata of HOK (Javits Center expansion architects) and Bill Pedersen of KPF (New York Sports & Convention Center architects). The evening exhibition opening featured remarks by Chapter President Mark Ginsberg and Bruce Mau, who designed the exhibition and will bring environmental graphics flair to the Jets facility. Chapter Executive Director Rick Bell reiterated the AIA New York Chapter Board support for the New York Sports & Convention Center.

Tidings from the Windy City: The AIA Convention of 2004

Any pretext is reason enough for spending five days in Chicago, whose architecture continues to strut its stuff at the head of the nation in boldness, originality, and high style. This was crystallized by Helmut Jahn, FAIA, of Murphy/Jahn Architects, who went thirty minutes over his allotted time as a keynote speaker at the AIA national convention. But nobody minded as he managed to communicate through slides his particular brand of glass and steel minimalism, where less was more but where he had reached a level of Absolute Zero-there was no more "less" to be squeezed out... Caples Jefferson Architects/Lee Timchula Architects: Queens Theatre-in-the-Park

The joint venture team of Caples Jefferson Architects and Lee Timchula Architects is designing a new 75-person cabaret and 250-person reception center for the Queens Theatre-in-the-Park in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. The existing building is, itself, a conversion of the Philip Johnson-designed Theaterama in the New York State Pavilion of the 1964-65 World's Fair. The curved form of the new cabaret, clad in matching stucco, complements the geometry of the original cylindrical 500-seat theater. The transparent, spiraling reception pavilion will be topped with a golden inverted dome. The $5.3 million project is expected to be completed in 2006.

On the Boards: Gruzen Samton Architects: Student Support Services Building at Medgar Evers College

Earlier this month, Gruzen Samton held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new 45,000-square-foot building, which will form a gateway to Medgar Evers College's Brooklyn campus. The design features a three-story lobby enclosed by glass, classrooms, offices, and student activity spaces, and sustainable design features throughout. Construction is expected to begin this summer.

New York Foundation for Architecture News: Salvadori Charrette

Salvadori Center's annual Charrette brought together 80 students and 20 practicing architects and engineers for an exciting daylong event on June 2 at the Center for Architecture. This year's design challenge, themed "Streetscapes and Memory." presented the middle and high school students with the task of creating a memorial for a holiday or event using LaGuardia Park across the street from the Center (anchored by a life-size bronze of Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia). Architects and engineers from Battery Park City Authority, Beyer Blinder Belle, Cerami & Associates, DeSimone, Kohn Pedersen Fox, Lucius Pitkin, NYC Transit Authority, Port Authority of NY&NJ, and Weidlinger Associates, among others, mentored the students in how to convey their ideas as realistic 3-D models.

A frenzy of sketching, discussing, cutting, building, and pizza eating (involving students and mentors alike) ensued. Five hours later, well-conceived projects dedicated to the war on terrorism, peace, summertime, youth, famous New Yorkers, the 4th of July, and reflection, emerged from the chaos. And who knows how many future urban planners and architects may emerge from such an adventure? For more information about Salvadori Center and its mission, click on link above or call 212-650-5497.

Kudos for Architalkers

At the Annual Meeting of the Chapter on June 17, the Architalkers were highly commended for their valuable outreach efforts in making the Center for Architecture more accessible and understandable to a broad segment of the public, as well as to professionals. Jerry Maltz received the Vice Presidential Citation for Public Outreach in recognition of the Architalker Program, which the Citation describes as "a vital information link for the AIA."

Architalkers enjoy sitting at the front desk, greeting visitors, and answering a vast range of often challenging questions about architecture, the AIA, and New York City. Architalkers typically spend one morning or afternoon per week at the Center, usually 10am-2pm, 2-6pm, or 6-8pm on a weekday of their choice; or from 11am-3pm or 1-5pm on a Saturday (at present we especially need more Saturday participants). We can be more flexible if this schedule is not workable for you. Serving as an Architalker qualifies for Community Service credit in the IDP Program, and all Architalkers are eligible to attend most events at the Center free of charge. Won't you join us? Please contact Jerry Maltz: njmaltz@earthlink.net or 212-777-5131.
