The
jury convened at the Center for Architecture on Saturday,
January 31, 2004 following a submission deadline of
January 16, 2004. The jury reviewed more than 350 competition
entries received from more than 30 countries after participating
in a panel discussion that included significant members
of the community involved in the development of the
waterfront of the East River in the communities of Greenpoint
and Williamsburg in Brooklyn, New York.
The
members of the panel were Tom Hall, Director, East River
Kayak Club; Mark Strauss, Fox and Fowle Architects P.C.,
Urban Designer for the Open Space Initiative proposed
by GWAPP and the TPL; Howard Slatkin from the Brooklyn
Office of the New York City Department of City Planning;
and Tim Gamble, Secretary of the Downtown Boathouse.
The Jury included Keller Easterling, Yale University;
Jefferson Ellinger, Rensselaer Polytechnic University,
Elinger Yehia Design; Lauri Firstenberg, Assistant Director
and Curator, MAK Center for Art and Architecture, LA
at the Schindler House; Tom Hall Co-Founder, Director,
East River Kayak Club; Margi Ruddick, University of
Pennsylvania, Margie Ruddick Landscape; and Peter Zellner,
Southern California Institute of Architecture, Zellner
and Associates.
The
Moderator was James Lima, President, Governors Island
Preservation and Education Corporation.
