“Reincarnation,” the rebirth of a soul in a new embodiment. This particular site on Roosevelt Island gives new meaning to the word reincarnation. The Smallpox Hospital ruins encompass a richness of beauty that relates to its history and influence on the island. From the exterior, the ruins suggest signs of decay or death. However, the inside tells a story of a soul that evokes discovery. This force drives a continuation, or new life form, to emerge from its depths and extend, not only from itself, but also throughout the site.
