Date: Tuesday 9/9/2003

Location: Cooper Union, Albert Nerken Engineering Building, Wollman Auditorium.
51 Astor Place (Between 3rd and 4th Avenues), NYC

Time: 5:30 - 8:00 PM

Description: The AIA/NY Chapter Technology Committee is proud to host a special two-and-a-half hour symposium for its September 9th event entitled, ‘Sign as Surface’, to be held in conjunction with an exhibit of the same name opening on September 6th at the Artists Space gallery (www.artistsspace.org) in Soho. Curated by Peter Zellner, Studio Faculty Member at the Southern California Institute of Architecture and author of the book ‘Hybridspace: New Forms in Digital Architecture’ (http://www.amazon.com), the symposium will bring together several of today’s leading ‘next generation’ architects who will discuss the meaning behind their work and the impact digital technology is having not only in the production of that work but in its aesthetic ramifications as well. Is technology a means unto itself and can – or should – it be codified into an architectural aesthetic? Is there value in an architecture whose sole representation can now be established readily via digital means and virtual production, or is validity conferred only in the physical manifestation of such ideas? What are the implications of digital technology and digital production on today’s young practitioners, and what does all of this mean for the future of architecture? These, and other topics, will be discussed. The following exhibit participants are scheduled to speak:
