About the Health Facilities Committee

The Health Facilities Committee has existed for many years and has always focused on architecture for healthcare. The committee's mission is to provide education seminars, field trips and discussions for any individual interested in improving their personal knowledge of healthcare facility design. Topics range from Long Term Care to Acute Care Hospitals. They cover items pertaining to better design, changes in the code, and the concerns of staff, patients, residents, administrators and others. The committee offers a forum within which individuals can share specific concerns and consult among others of similar interest. It seeks to act as a conduit between the membership and the New York City chapter of the AIA.

The committee generally schedules seminars the third Wednesday of every month at 6:30 PM. Additionally, it schedules field trips to various institutions the following Friday afternoon at 3:00 PM. On occasion, scheduling issues arise and events are scheduled for different days or times, but as a rule, we try to stay to our monthly schedule. Events are generally worth 2 CES credits and are reported directly to the University of Oklahoma. Credits apply toward requirements set by the AIA as well as the State of New York and usually qualify as HSW credits.

In addition to the aforementioned, the committee periodically meets as a group to discuss subjects of interest. General meetings begin at 6:00 PM and are usually scheduled before seminars. The meeting is open to anyone who wishes to attend and there is no charge. We encourage anyone to make suggestions for future seminars or field trips

Helen Cohen, AIA, chairs the committee. She can be contacted by email at h.cohen@perkinseastman.com or at Perkins Eastman, 115 Fifth Avenue, NY, NY 10003, ph. 212-353-7220, fax 212-353-7676. Anyone wishing to be included on the mailing list is encouraged to contact her directly.

The committee owes its existence to a dedicated core group of individuals who meet outside the general meetings to determine what events will be scheduled for each year and who is going to work to see that everything required to bring an event together gets done. We encourage anyone wishing to participate at that level to join in. Please contact the committee chairperson if you are interested.

Additionally, he committee owes a debt of gratitude to its sponsors. Numerous contractors and consulting engineers contribute annually in order for the committee to pay honorariums and travel expenses for out-of-town speakers. Without them, our program would be much diminished.
