The AIA NY Chapter
Committee on the Environment aims to lead, inspire and educate our members
towards the dual objectives of Design + Sustainability. COTE organizes
a series of engaging activities and monthly events which focus on leading
architects, outstanding green buildings, current technologies and product
research, and sustainable design practices.
Our efforts are based
on the belief that sustainability should be an essential part of the design
process and fully integrated with all aspects of a building, including
form, function, site, structure, systems and construction.
Under its previous
chair Robert Siegel, AIA, and founding chair Joyce Lee, AIA, COTE developed
into one of the New York Chapter's most active committees. The current
co-chairs seek to continue COTE's mission to provide our members with
the knowledge and tools necessary to integrate sustainability into their
design practices. In the process, we also hope to encourage those outside
the design community to embrace sustainability and appreciate the value
of good design.

GOALS top
This year we continue to build upon three goals for the COTE committee:
Learn
COTE will
offer a diverse range of educational opportunities, including lectures
by leaders
in the field of sustainable design, workshops and informative sessions
aimed at "take home" knowledge, and informal fun events to
experience sustainable design firsthand.
Connect
COTE hopes to team
up with members of the sustainable and design communities to network,
collaborate and co-host events. Potential partners include professional
organizations (e.g., ASLA, SEAoNY, ASHRAE, IESNY, IIDA, APA), sustainable
groups (e.g., GreenHomeNYC, Green Drinks, EBA/NYS, EarthPledge, USGBC,
ADPSR, Earth Day, O2, Green Ground Zero), as well as other Committees
of the AIA New York Chapter.
Promote
Through our website
and direct outreach efforts, COTE will attempt to promote our message
beyond the design community to champion sustainability and good design,
encourage a dialogue in the public domain, and foster an exchange of ideas.
We hope to develop relationships with community and citizens groups (e.g.,
NYC Council on the Environment), local schools of Architecture (e.g.,
Columbia, Cooper Union, CUNY, NJIT, NYIT, Parsons, Pratt) and NYC high
school students (e.g., High School for Environmental Studies).
