  • Stephen Cabell, composition '08 Conservatoire Americain

Come discover a decades old summer program which uniquely blends music and architecture. Founded in 1923 with the mission of introducing Americans to the French artistic tradition in music and beaux arts, the school is located in the magnificent Chateau de Fontainebleau, summer residence of the French kings from Francis I to the Emperors Napoleon I and III.

The Conservatoire American (Music School) was begun by Nadia Boulanger, the most influential music pedagogue of the 20th century, whose first students included Aaron Copland. The Ecole des Beaux Arts, started two years later, adopted the same mission in the spheres of architecture, painting and sculpture. Its past Directors included J. Carlu, A. Remondet (architect of the French Embassy in Washington, DC), P. Devinoy, B. de La Tour d’Auvergne, M. Tournon-Brandly, J L Nouvian, and the current director Anthony Bechu.
