A Conference on the Future of Sustainable Buildings in Northern ManhattanThursday, 10/25/2007, 8:00am–12:30pm Build It Green! is an important conference aimed at bringing healthy
construction, maintenance, and retrofitting practices
to the neighborhoods of Northern Manhattan. This
conference, will provide participants with practical
information on financing green building projects,
implementing non-hazardous cleaning and pest
management strategies, retrofitting existing buildings
to create greener, healthier environments, and the nuts
and bolts of creating green roofs. Amanda Burden,
Director of the Department of City Planning, will be
our keynote speaker and a range of experts will lead
informative discussions on each of these topics.
A Product and Manufacturer Expo will run through the duration of the conference. Designing for Emergencies and Sustainability: New York City’s New Office of Emergency Management HQsThursday, 10/25/2007, 6:00–8:00pm The Office of Emergency Management HQs in Brooklyn is New York City’s
emergency response center and the central command in case of an emergency.
Completed in the summer of 2006, it is the first City of New York owned and
operated headquarters building to achieve LEED™ NC 2.1 Silver Certification.
Within the building, the Emergency Operations Command (EOC) is the major
program space. With a 100 person capacity, here is where all of the City, State
and Federal agencies come together to coordinate efforts for dealing with any
emergency operation. Another critical space, the Watch Command (WC), houses
the personnel who monitor events, weather and communications, and who notify
City officials and activate the EOC. These operations are supported by offices
and office support, a press/conference center, locker rooms and other personnel

SMPS CANstruction® Long Island is a design/build competition where teams of Architects, Engineers, Contractors and Students put a visual spotlight on hunger while showcasing the Long Island Design Community’s best and brightest!
Long Island Design Teams will build structures made solely from cans of food, ingenuity and teamwork! Winners will go on to a national competition. All cans will eventually be donated to Long Island Cares, Inc./The Harry Chapin Food Bank.
CANstruction® is a national charity committed to ending hunger, using ‘one can’ as a catalyst for change. Under the auspices of the Society for Design Administration.
Exhibit will remain open to the public Oct. 26 through Nov. 4
