2008 AIA New York Building Type Design Awards
CALL FOR ENTRIES
The AIA New York Chapter Biennial Buildng Type Awards program has been established to recognize excellence and innovation in specialized design fields. The 2008 design categories will be: Educational Facility Design, Sustainable Design, and Urban Design. Beginning this year, the program will be co-sponsored with the Boston Society of Architects. The program's purpose is to increase recognition of design excellence in specialized fields and to honor the architects, clients and consultants who work together to improve the built environment. Entries are welcomed and encouraged regardless of project size, budget or style, from both established and new practitioners. The winning designs will be exhibited at the Center for Architecture in May 2008.

Projects located anywhere in the world designed by AIA New York Chapter or Boston Society of Architects/ Massachusetts registered architect members or nonmember registered architects practicing in New York City and Massachusetts; and projects located in New York City or Massachusetts designed by registered architects practicing anywhere.
Any pre K-12, K-12 and higher education facilities, public or private, completed after January 1, 2000 may be submitted. Pre K/K-12 facilities and higher education facilities will be judged separately. Projects already honored in the BSA Design Awards Program are not
eligible.
Eligible projects may be new construction, adaptive-reuse, or rehabilitations.

Any projects completed after January 1, 2001; and un-built projects approved for construction after January 1, 2006 may be submitted. Projects already honored in the BSA Design Awards Program are not eligible.
Submissions for all sizes and types of new construction, adaptive re-use, historic preservation, and urban or community planning are encouraged. The jurors will consider awards for the following categories:

- Adaptive Re Use

Un-built projects (or projects under construction) approved for construction after January 1, 2006 must be accompanied by a statement that approvals for construction and funding have been obtained.

Projects located anywhere in the world that are designed by: AIA New York Chapter or Boston Society of Architects/ Massachusetts AIA members or landscape architects and professional planners practicing in New York City or Massachusetts; or projects located in New York City or Massachusetts designed by registered architects, landscape architects, and professional planners practicing anywhere in the world.
Any projects completed after January 1, 1998 may be submitted. Projects already honored in the BSA Urban Design Awards Program are not eligible.
Projects eligible for submission include but are not limited to urban infill, transit oriented projects, regional plans, waterfront planning projects, historic preservation, new community designs, campus plans, and groups of buildings that form an urban design.
Unimplemented or un-built urban design projects are eligible provided they meet other applicable requirements of the program. The client for unimplemented or un-built projects must be identified.
Registration and Submission Process
Register online at acteva.com. When Registration and payment are complete, the entrant will receive an email with username, password and instruction to complete the submission process. Entrants put data about the project, client, professional associates and photographs into an on-line data system. This will allow the creation of hard copy forms in the appropriate format.
The hard copy forms and original photographs must then be compiled in an anonymous 8½"×11" soft cover binder supplied by the entrant. Submissions binders received after the March 7th deadline, those that include the name of the entrant or design team, or those that otherwise do not meet the stated requirements will be disqualified with no reconsideration. Entry Fees
Architect Members (AIA New York and BSA): $175*
Nonmembers: $275
Late fee for registration after the March 1, deadline: $50
* All projects other than those for Urban Design must be submitted by a
registered architect.
Return of Submissions
Submissions will be returned by FedEx after May 15, 2008. Entrants will receive an email shortly after completion of the program that provides the FedEx Tracking number; please do not provide a return envelope. Please do not call or email to find out the status of your submission.
Exhibition
Award recipients shall be provided Exhibition board requirements for the
Awards Exhibition after March 18, 2008. Award recipients will be
required to submit exhibition materials for display by April 7th.
The 2008 Design Awards Exhibition will open on May 1st and will remain on view through July 2008.
